ALT is found primarily in the liver and kidneys. Increased levels of ALT are generally a result of liver disease associated with some degree of hepatic necrosis such as cirrhosis, carcinoma, viral or toxic hepatitis and obstructive jaundice. Slight to moderate elevations have been observed after administration of medications such as NSAIDS, antibiotics, antiepileptic drugs, statins, or opiates.
