Shutdown Margin Monitor

Thermo Scientific* Shutdown Margin Monitor is designed for detection of unplanned boron dilution events, allowing sufficient time to stop an unplanned loss of shutdown margin.
The monitor can be used to detect unplanned boron dilution events, report significant increases in neutron flux and provide a 1/M or 1/N Meter. It accurately measures source range neutron count rate and computes an alarm setpoint as a user-selected multiple of the lowest measured count rate.

The Shutdown Margin Monitor measures the count rate from a neutron-counting instrument and identifies any statistically significant increase that would indicate a loss of reactor shutdown margin.

  • Special design minimizes unwanted background counts from electromagnetic pick-up or from alpha, beta or gamma flux at the detector
  • Also provides normalized inverse count rate (1/M) as an aid in fuel loading and approach to criticality
  • Can supply containment evacuation and high flux at shutdown alarms and trips, eliminating false signals from older equipment and frequent operator adjustment
  • Provides warning of unintentional loss of shutdown margin
  • Monitors neutron flux count rate at the reactor core for a statistically significant increase
