Optical Emission Spectrometer Control Sample Packages

Thermo Scientific* Optical Emission Spectrometer Control Sample Packages reduce operating costs and eliminate the need for the user to prepare control samples.
The use of SPC techniques allows anticipation of potential drift problems to prevent them, lowering costs accordingly. Now, Thermo ARL* offers this operating mode as a turnkey solution, preconfigured and ready for use at the day of installation, removing the need for the user to manufacture control samples.

Historically, the control samples were introduced to reduce the drift correction costs. Typical samples were analyzed at regular time intervals and the drift correction (standardization) was performed only when the results were out of defined control limits. Thesechanges allowed some cost savings reactively, as actions were taken only once the problem had been diagnosed. Control samples also allowed the concept of selective standardization to be introduced.

Cost reduction is achieved through:

  • The frequency of drift correction is reduced: corrections are made only when required
  • The control analysis is faster than the standardization, as only one or two typical samples are run, and lower-cost samples are used
  • The investment in more expensive and setup of numerous samples is reduced
  • Instrument is more available for its primary task: production costs associated with instrument unavailability are reduced

Features of Daily Operation

  • May automatically request to run control samples at configured time intervals, e.g. at shift changes
  • When the control samples have been analyzed, the results are automatically transferred to the SPC package where they are checked according to the chosen rules
  • When the results are not good, the operator is informed which elements should be drift-corrected
  • Requested samples are automatically selected for standardization depending on the elements declared out-of-control
