Electron Transfer Dissociation (ETD)
Thermo Scientific* Electron Transfer Dissociation (ETD) is a powerful fragmentation technique that complements traditional collision-induced dissociation (CID).
Unlike traditional CID, which cleaves weakly bound modifications off the peptide backbone, ETD uses reagent gas anions and gas-phase ion/ion chemistry to induce fragmentation along the peptide backbone in a sequence-independent manner, leaving labile modifications linked to the peptide chain. This greatly simplifies identification of the site(s) of modification. ETD produces primarily c- and z-type fragment ions that are an excellent complement to the b- and y-type fragment ions produced by CID. Together, ETD and CID can significantly increase sequence coverage and give added confidence to protein identifications.
