Ion Chamber Detector Assemblies

Thermo Scientific* Ion Chamber Detector Assemblies are designed for use in safety-related neutron flux monitoring applications.
Dual (upper and lower) Uncompensated Ion Chamber (UIC) Power Range neutron flux monitoring detector assemblies are qualified for full safety-related applications.

Assemblies consist of a 12  ft. x 3.125  in. diameter uncompensated aluminum ion chamber with upper and lower sensing volumes, three external coaxial cables, and a supporting rigid aluminum half-pipe with clamps.

Aluminum Ion Chamber

  • Uses Boron enriched with B-10 as a neutron-sensing material
  • Two 69 inch sensitive volumes
  • One electrode delivers high voltage to both sensing areas
  • Two signal electrodes (one for each sensing area) for choice of monitoring modes: independent monitoring of upper and lower signals, or connection in parallel to provide a signal proportional to the integral of the flux over the full length of the detector

Coaxial Cable Assemblies

  • Hermetically sealed to bottom (or top) end of detector by a series of metallic joints
  • First 18 feet is mineral-insulated (MI) with stainless-steel conductors and aluminum-oxide insulation, terminated at each end with a ceramic-to-metal seal
  • Remaining portion is organic-insulated and permanently spliced to the MI cable outside bioshield
  • Three cable assemblies merge about 8 inches below bottom of detector into a single integrated assembly covered by a fiberglass sleeve
  • After emerging from the sleeve, the last 6 inches separate into three assemblies, each terminated with an HN connector permanently marked with the cable function (HV, U, L)
