Calcium plays an essential role in bone mineralization, blood coagulation, muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve signaling and release of certain hormones. Increased levels are associated with hyperparathyroidism, metastatic bone lesions, and Vitamin A or D overdose. Decreased levels are most commonly associated with hypoalbuminemia but can also be observed in cases of hypoparathyroidism, Vitamin D deficiency or resistance, chronic renal failure, and calcium losing syndromes.
