MultiLab 2000

Thermo Scientific MultiLab 2000 is a versatile surface analysis instrument that provides the analytical and sample treatment capabilities that most closely match user requirements.
In many research laboratories surface analysis, particularly that which is based on XPS, is becoming an essential analytical tool for the understanding of advanced new materials. For this type of work, flexibility in the analysis and in the sample preparation capabilities can be very important. MultiLab 2000 provides a configurable surface analysis system for this type of work. As with all of the surface analysis instruments from Thermo Scientific, data acquisition, processing and reporting are performed using the Avantage data system.

XPS is well-established in many branches of materials characterisation and it is now an essential tool for the development of advanced materials in many areas of technology from bio-materials to semiconductor materials. The mu-metal analysis chamber on MultiLab 2000 is fitted with the popular Alpha 110 electron energy analyzer. The user can then choose to include a monochromated and/or a twin anode X-ray source for XPS measurements. A UV lamp can be chosen if UPS measurements are required. Preparation chambers and preparation accessories are also available for MultiLab 2000.

Key Features

  • A highly versatile XPS instrument
  • All MultiLab 2000 instruments are fitted with the high-performance Alpha110 hemispherical electron energy analyzer fitted to a UHV analysis chamber fabricated from mu-metal
  • Precision, four-axis stage provides accurate and convenient sample alignment

Configuarable Options

  • XR3, a twin anode X-ray source, offering a choice of X-ray anodes
  • XR5, a focusing X-ray monochromator based on an aluminium anode
  • UVL, a UV lamp for UPS measurements
  • EX05, a high performance ion gun for depth profiling and ion scattering spectroscopy
  • EX03, an ion gun for cleaning the sample surface prior to analysis

Alpha 110 Analyser

  • Energy resolution <5meV
  • High sensitivity for XPS, UPS, AES and ISS
  • Small area XPS capability down to 100µm
  • Angle resolved XPS capability with an angular resolution of ±1°

Sample Manipulator

  • MultiLab 2000 instruments have a sample manipulator with four axes of movement
  • Range of motion is 50mm in X, 12mm in Y and 12mm in Z, with 5µm resolution, and tilt from -90° to +90°
  • Sample heating and cooling are available
  • Temperatures up to 1000K can be reached with the additional heated sample stub
  • Samples may be cooled using liquid nitrogen to 170K
  • After loading the sample onto the four-axis manipulator, the CCD camera and microscope are focused on the analysis position to achieve accurate sample alignment, which is essential

Sample Preparation Options

If preparation facilities are required then one of a range of preparation chambers can be fitted.

  • A high pressure gas cell for studies involving catalysts
  • A heating/cooling stage
  • The EX03 ion gun for sample cleaning
  • A gas introduction system

Thermo Scientific surface analysis instruments and components are controlled by the Avantage data system:

  • Integrates all aspects of the analysis, including instrument control, data acquisition, data processing and reporting
  • Windows based software package which allows remote control via a network and easy interfacing to third party software packages such as Microsoft Word
  • Takes care of the total analysis process from sample to report
