Surfer

Thermo Scientific* Surfer sets a new standard for specific surface area and pore size analysis. Surfer applies the principle of static volumetric gas adsorption under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure to determine micro structural properties of solids and powders.
Specific surface area and pore volume – pore size distributions are important parameters for the characterization of porous materials as they are directly related to their capacity to react with or dissolve in other substances. Surfer is suitable for any application requiring the characterization of very small pore size, in the range of meso and micro pores. Most common applications are relevant to adsorbent substances like activated carbon and zeolites, but also any type of sample where it is necessary to know the specific surface area and pore dimensions (like alumina, silica, metal supported catalysts, pigments, pharmaceutical powders, etc.).
Alert: Surfer needs liquid coolants (like liquid nitrogen or argon). Liquid coolants are not supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. Before using liquid nitrogen, read the indications of hazard and the instructions reported in the safety sheet by the supplier with reference to the CAS number (Chemical Abstract Service) 7727-37-9.

Thermo Scientific Surfer is composed of two separate modules that can be used either independently or connected together, the analyzer and the sample prep degasser. Customization and modularity are important benefits of the Surfer, enabling the analyst to obtain the best results in terms of surface area and pore size for any kind of material, from extremely low surface area (non-porous or macro-porous) to very high surface area and large pore volumes (e.g. the case of micro and mesopore samples). Surfer can be configured and customized easily on demand choosing from a wide range of vacuum pumps, pressure transducers and gauges, type of valves, etc.

  • Temperature controlled cabinet by a P.I.D. device (proportional, derivative, integral control) isolates the manifold and all pressure sensors from external temperature effects for unrivalled stability
  • Surfer accuracy will not be compromised from environment temperature variations as temperature is kept constant at about 35°C with a stability of ±0.1°C
  • New and high precision cryogenic coolant level control gives excellent stability of equilibrium pressures in the sample holder as the liquid coolant level features an oscillation within only 50 micronsfrom the set point
  • The calibrated reference chamber has its own pressure transducer thus the reference volume is not added to the dead space over the sample when measuring the equilibrium pressures for unmatched accuracy in pressure detection
  • The gas dose is measured by a separate pressure transducer in a reference calibrated stainless steel chamber where the gas temperature is measured with 0.01°C resolution
  • Built-in calibration, linearization and alignment routines for absolute pressure transducers provide utmost accuracy in pressure reading
  • Using standard accuracy pressure transducers, Surfer can show a combined linearity error lower than 0.1% in the working pressure range
Surfer features a completely new and improved data acquisition software, providing utmost resolution isotherms in an easy and comprehensible way. An innovative method based on a pressure-volume triangulation method collects the experimental points (equilibrium pressures) where needed on the isotherm, enhancing the precision in the region of interest.

  • Mode “Zones”: the user can select up to 10 + 10 (adsorption and desorption) pressure regions, choosing for each region the pressure steps and the equilibration conditions
  • Mode “NPT” (Next Point Triangulation method): an automatic mode suitable for non-porous, macro and mesoporous materials. Surfer decides automatically the steps at which equilibrium pressures must be collected with a degree of resolution that is decided by the user
  • Mode “NPLT “ (Next Point Logarithmic Triangulation method): specially designed for micro and ultra-microporous materials (works also if mesopores are present), when the equilibrium pressure falls a extremely low values
Includes:
  • Dewar reservoir 3L
  • Sample holder
  • LAN crossed cable for direct connection to acomputer
  • Acquisition and data processing software
  • Instruction manuals
