Living cells in vivo obtain the nutrients they require directly from the blood and biological tissues that surround them. Cell culture media are composed of inorganic salts, sugars (energy sources), vitamins, amino acids and other components which are intended to mimic as nearly as possible these natural biological fluids. Duplicating natureapostrophes miracle with exactness is, of course, impossible. Accordingly, animal derived serum is a popular media supplement (FBS in particular). Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is a natural biological fluid, is readily available, provides not only the necessary nutrients, but contains all the other biological and environmental factors that cells in vitro are accustomed to.
