AST is widely distributed with high concentrations in the heart, liver, skeletal muscle, and kidney. Damage or disease to any of these tissues such as myocardial infarction, viral hepatitis, liver necrosis, cirrhosis and muscular dystrophy may result in raised serum levels of AST.
